Unknown Steps

Unknown Steps began with a very purposeful decision to move to a more focused design process. It was in the beginning of design when I started considering and then fully embraced iteration as a core ideal.

The designs all originate from two small prototypes started between 2015 and 2017 with the initial 10 paintings completed between 2016 and 2019.

All designs feature a line that begins in the lower right corner — or in one instance, above it — that travels left and upward toward some point in the lower third of the composition before branching up and to the left again. All other elements attach to or hang off of this core obtuse angle.

Three designs reoccur, sharing the same core layout but with slight compositional variations across two different scales — either 12”x12” or 36”x36”. These are Unknown Steps 1 and 5, 2 and 8, and 7 and 10.
